Coming to university as a first year

Moving from school to university is a big change and for most people there is a sense of walking into the unknown! We want to help you make the jump to being a uni student well so that you can hit the ground running in your first few weeks!

Top tips for starting university:

  1. Find out if Student Life is on your campus! We’re not biased… ok, maybe just a little… but we know that getting involved with Student Life is a good thing! In Student Life, not only will you connect with other students who have been there a while and know where everything else is, but you have the opportunity to learn more about the Christian faith and grow in a relationship with Christ.
  2. Find a campus map and keep it in your pocket/bag. Especially if it’s a big university, finding your class on time can be a challenge without a map!
  3. Find a place where you can meet people (Cafeteria, common areas) and find a place where you can be left alone to get your work done!
  4. Make sure you meet people in your classes. For most areas of study, the people around you will be in a lot of your other classes as well!
  5. University lecturers are not like school teachers. They will not chase you for your work. Don’t leave assignments till the last few days because you won’t be giving them your best.

Most of all, make sure you use your university years well! They can be lots of fun, but they can also be challenging and they will shape who you become, not just what you will do for work!
